More About Bad Pet Food

Of late, there is more news about the bad pet food so I am posting the latest info. Hope all your pets are well.

A few additional foods are being recalled; lawsuits are springing up and people are worried with good reason.

It seems that the wheat gluten in the dog food contained melamine...used in making plastic!

An aside here - plastic is becoming more well known as a major source of "much badness." In San Francisco, the Board of Supervisors approved legislation this past Tuesday "to outlaw plastic checkout bags at large supermarkets in about six months and large chain pharmacies in about a year."
Full article HERE.

HERE is a CNN article about recent recalls and if you are in Oregon, HERE is a link to a local article that includes Oregon and FDA links for more information.

Some news sources suggest checking your dry pet food for what gluten - I just did and feel a lot better - none there!

Hmmmm - novel floating home

Saw this in the news today

Poor man's floating home turns Rio recycling model

By Andrei Khalip
Sun Mar 18, 8:32 AM ET

A floating house built out of trash in a reeking channel of a Rio de Janiero slum will be preserved as a model for recycling in a government anti-pollution campaign.

Luiz Bispo says his house, kept afloat by hundreds of empty plastic bottles, had been set to be demolished by authorities. But popular support and unexpected help from the new state environment secretary, Carlos Minc, have turned it into something to boast about.... he spent about $170 to build the house, mainly on cement and roof material. The rest came from construction waste and furniture he found at dump sites.

Want a Trader Joes in Delta Park?

There is a letter going around the neighborhood inviting Trader Joe to add a store in the Delta Park area.

If you think this is a good idea, cut and paste the letter below and send it off to Mr. Bane or feel free to pen your own. There is a tab on their website to suggest locations, but it has been suggested that "real" letters count more...

Mr. Dan Bane
CEO
Trader Joe's Company
800 Shamrock Avenue
Monrovia, California 91016

Dear Mr. Bane:

I live in the Delta Park area of North Portland. My neighbors and I would love to have a Trader Joe's close to our neighborhood.

Here's why:
This location is close to Washington and for tax reasons, many people from there shop in Portland. The commuters would have easy access to stop on their way home. The Columbia River is near and there are several hundred floating homes.

There are also many new homes, townhouses, and condos that overook the river and are in the $300,000-$500,000 price range. Much of this area of North Portland is experiencing a tremendous growth.

The Delta Park area now has GI Joe's, Petco, West Marine, Lowes, Wickes Furniture, Burger King, and other retail businesses and restaurants. Portland Meadows Horse Track, Portland International Raceway and the Expo Center are all close or in Delta Park.

It is close to major thoroughfares, e.g., 1-5 and Marine Drive. Delta Park also is a major ballpark for softball and soccer. The Marriott has a Residence Inn and a Courtyard near and there are a few other hotels as well.

The closest Trader Joe's is 10 miles away.

There are two available buildings at the Delta Park location that would be perfect for Trader Joe's. New Neville is handling the lease for these two buildings. Their telephone number is 503-241-1222.

We believe Delta Park would be a perfect fit for a Trader Joe's.

Thank you for your consideration.

Let's recycle more

Hi neighbors - and all else who read this blog

We are good at recycling - but still we are not great. 46% of us around here recycle - but why not 100%?

I see newspapers, cans and plastic bottles in the trash bin - why are they not in the recycle bin? [which is only a few feet away]

Beats me.. but if it's near the top and not covered with yuk - I put that stuff in the recycle bins..

Let's keep our environment cleaner - RECYCLE
